Nicolas Piramal India Limited and Merck & Co. Inc. have entered into research and development tie-up to discoverand develop new drugs for two selected targets provided by Merck. NPIL will be responsible for carrying out anintegrated drug discovery program including non-clinical studies and human clinical trials demonstratingproof-of-concept primarily for oncology. Merck will ... have an option to advance the most promising drug candidatesinto late stage clinical trials and to commercialise these drug candidates. NPIL will receive milestone payments of upto $175 million per target for development of drug candidates. It will also earn royalties on sales of any products resulting from the collaboration.
Merck’s drug and vaccine research and development efforts continue to improve public health worldwide. Vaccines provide an important tool for the prevention of serious, often life-threatening diseases throughout the world. Merck’s vaccine program gained considerable momentum in the 1950s with the arrival of Dr. Maurice Hilleman who led that research from 1957 to 1984. During that period, he and his team developed eight of the fourteen routinely recommended vaccines. Some of these vaccines have virtually defeated what were once considered the most common childhood diseases.
Under Merck's oversight, Dynavax will continue to manage the ongoing Phase 3 studies in Canada and Europe as well as other licensure-required studies. The United States Food and Drug Administration Biologics Licensing Application (BLA) and other marketing applications will be the joint responsibility of Merck and Dynavax, and will be filed by Merck. Dynavax will be responsible for manufacture of the hepatitis B surface antigen component of the vaccine for Merck, which will be produced at Dynavax Europe's Dusseldorf, Germany facility using Dynavax's proprietary technology developed there and later, at a new facility to support expected market needs.

Under the agreement, Merck will pay Isis to design antisense inhibitors to specific genes for target validation. Isis will maintain rights to develop antisense drugs to the genes. More specific financial terms of the agreement were not disclosed.
The new agreement substantially expands the existing successful collaboration between ChemBridge and Merck in the combinatorial chemistry field. According to this agreement, Merck and ChemBridge scientists will closely collaborate over the next three years to design and produce multiple chemically sophisticated small molecule libraries useful in drug discovery. Implementation of the agreement will rely on the critical mass of chemical resources and technologies of ChemBridge and CRL. Such technologies enable the parallel synthesis of double-digit milligram amounts of diverse, chemically challenging, highly pure and quality controlled small molecules which possess the characteristics that are the most desirable from the medicinal chemistry perspective. The ChemBridge/CRL technology platform ... includes a proprietary combinatorial building block collection that is one of the largest and most value-added in the industry. This chemistry-focused proprietary technology platform was first developed by ChemBridge for the production of its flagship PHARMACore™ combinatorial lead discovery library.
Merck and GlycoFi - announced in December 2005 a broad strategic alliance and multi-year research collaboration to develop biologic and vaccine drug candidates. GlycoFi and Merck scientists will work together to deploy GlycoFi’s technology to produce and optimize various pharmaceutical properties of a broad range of Merck’s biologic drug candidates, including vaccines, antibodies, and other therapeutic proteins. According to Merck's 10-K filing for 2006, "Under the terms of the agreement, Merck will make an upfront cash payment and an equity investment in GlycoFi, and fund GlycoFi’s research efforts taking place under the program. GlycoFi is eligible to receive milestone payments as products from the collaboration move through development, and a royalty on sales of commercialized products." http://www.secinfo.com/dsvr4.u2R9.htm
