Rehabilitation Research and Training Center on Aging with Mental Retardation (RRTCAMR) The RRTCAMR is a national resource for researchers, planners, providers, self-advocates, families and students in the field of aging and mental retardation. Its web site includes information on its research projects and publications.
The American Association on Mental Retardation (AAMR) has developed another widely accepted diagnostic classification system for mental retardation. The AAMR classification system focuses on the capabilities of retarded individuals rather than on their limitations. The categories describe the level of support required, including intermittent support, limited support, extensive support, and pervasive support. To some extent, the AAMR classification mirrors the DSM-IV-TR classification. Intermittent support, for example, is support that is needed only occasionally, perhaps during times of stress or crisis for the retarded person. It is the type of support typically required for most mildly retarded people.

At the other end ofthe spectrum, pervasive support, or life-long, daily support for most adaptive areas, would be required for profoundly retarded individuals.

Similarly, the American Association on Mental Retardation is presently engaged in extensive discussions concerning a potential organizational name change, perhaps to "The American Association on Intellectual Disabilities." While a final decision had not been reached by October 2002, it appears likely that the change will occur.

Mental Retardation is diagnosed through the use of standardized tests of intelligence and adaptive skills usually administered by a psychologist. Check with your insurance carrier for a list of psychologists covered by your plan.
