Men's Movement
built 655 days ago
The profeminist men's movement bases its analysis of masculinity on the social psychology of writers such as Nancy Chodorow and Dorothy Dinnerstein. As several of the articles in this collection recount, the basic idea is that maleness is produced and reproduced in infancy when young boys internalize the idea that they must separate themselves from their mothers and suppress the feminine side of their personalities. The ultimate solution to men's pain and to gender inequality ... rests in men's ability to recoup this suppressed side of themselves. If men did learn to reconnect with the feminine side of themselves the world might indeed by a better place, but it is still not clear how that would lead to the redistribution of the political and economic resources that is required for a more egalitarian world to emerge. And the argument that the root of the problem of gender inequality lies in this constitutive psychological process is, despite claims to the contrary, very similar to the arguments of the mytho-poetic men's movement. The key difference seems to be that one side wants men to rediscover their core essential masculinity while the other side suggests men need to rediscover the feminine aspects of their personalities.

You must understand ... that the men's movement is here for the duration. It will not go away. Moreover, if present evils persist, the movement will grow - stronger, larger, more intellectually sophisticated, more robustly integrated. The movement has naught to lose, and nowhere to go but up. Obstacles will pose no deterrent; it will flow over, around, or under any sort of roadblock it encounters. If temporarily held in check, the movement will gather force like water behind a dam.

Challenging and altering the prevailing gender order was not as easy as the men's movement had hoped. This ushered in a new era in the men's movement: the image of the softy man had to be expunged. Instead, other characteristics would be put forward, like men's presumed capacity to take action and their ability to think and act rationally.

Groups of men first challenged traditional masculinity in the early 1970s, when men influenced by the women's movement organized consciousness-raising groups, founded men's centers, and hosted men's gatherings. Berkeley, California, was the scene of some of the earliest of these pro-feminist gatherings, and many of the founders of this trend, such as writer and teacher Joseph Pleck, remain quite active.

It doesn't take a genius to see that these values are the very antithesis of the seven principles which the men's movement must adopt in order to change society's deeply held prejudices against men. Unfortunately, there are many people in the men's movement who are still blissfully unaware of the powerful role played by these strong societal forces in defining the male gender role. Their lack of awareness of these underlying forces means that they often reinforce the already strong prejudices against men.
The men's right movement campaign against the alleged misuse of section 498a of the Indian Penal Code, which they claim has led to the imprisonment of innocent men, their families and friends based on false accusations from their wives. One men's rights of organization, Save Indian Family, claims that 80% of the 58,200 lawsuits filed in 2005 were false. They seek to have section 498a made bailable and compoundable and non-cognizable, and point to the Supreme Court bench presided by Justice Arijit Pasayat and Justice H.K.Seema who warned against misuse of 498a and expressed concern that it could lead to legal terrorism on 20th July, 2005.
