Menopause: Ovaries
built 647 days ago
Menopause occurs when menstruation ceases for a period of one year; the ten to fifteen years prior to menopause are called perimenopause. Surgical menopause occurs when the ovaries are removed usually during hysterectomy. Learn what menopause is, the symptoms of perimenopause and menopause, and the treatments for menopause from traditional hormone replacement therapy or HRT to natural and bioidentical treatments for menopause.
Menopause starts as the ovaries begin to fail to be able to produce an egg or ovum every month. Since the process of producing and ripening the egg is ... what creates several of the key hormones involved in the monthly cycle, this in turn interrupts the regular pattern of the hormone cycles, and gradually leads to the somewhat chaotic and long-drawn out shutting down of the whole reproductive system.
Menopause is one event in the climacteric, the period of time during which the reproductive machinery slows down and finally stops. The biochemical hallmark of this period is a reduction in estrogen production by the ovary. Some estrogen continues to be produced by the adrenal gland and the fatty tissues throughout the body, but this amount is very small compared with premenopausal levels. Estrogen has widespread effects on both genital and extragenital systems, and the withdrawal of estrogen accounts for many of the signs and symptoms attributed to menopause, although these are influenced by both hereditary and social factors. Many psychological problems have been attributed to estrogen deprivation, but well-documented proof of those relationships is lacking.
