Meningitis: Symptoms
built 630 days ago
Meningitis is the term to denote inflammation of the meninges. Clinically, this characteristically results in theoccurrence of meningeal symptoms (eg, headache, nuchal rigidity, photophobia) and an increased number of white blood cells in the cerebrospinal fluid (CSF;pleocytosis). Depending on the duration of symptoms, meningitis may be classified as acute or chronic. Acute meningitis denotes the evolution of symptoms within hours to several days, while chronic meningitis has an onset and duration of weeks to months. The duration of symptoms of chronic meningitis is characteristically at least 4 weeks. In many instances, these syndromes overlap because they share many etiologic agents.

Viral meningitis is serious but rarely fatal in persons with normal immune systems. Usually, symptoms last 7-10 days and the person recovers completely. Many different viruses can cause meningitis. About 90% of cases of viral meningitis are caused by members of a group of viruses known as enteroviruses, such as coxsackieviruses and echoviruses. Herpes viruses and the mumps virus can ... cause viral meningitis. There is no vaccination or treatment for viral meningitis (except treatment for meningitis caused by the herpes virus).

Viral meningitis is usually not as dangerous as bacterial meningitis, although the symptoms often appear to be the same. About 90% of cases of viral meningitis are caused by a group of viruses known as enteroviruses. Herpes viruses and the mumps virus can ... cause viral meningitis. There is no treatment for viral meningitis. People usually get well on their own if they get plenty of bed rest. They are simply given plenty of fluids and also medicine to treat the fever and headaches.

The viruses that cause viral meningitis are contagious. Enteroviruses, for example, are very common during the summer and early fall, and many people are exposed to them. However, most infected persons either have no symptoms or develop only a cold or rash with low-grade fever. Typically, fewer than 1 of every 1000 persons infected actually develop meningitis. Therefore, if you are around someone who has viral meningitis, you have a moderate chance of becoming infected, but a very small chance of developing meningitis.
