Mendelssohn: Son
built 805 days ago
Franz von Mendelssohn, a banker, was the son of Alexander and his wife Marianne. He was born in Berlin on January 25, 1829, was ennobled in 1888, and died in Berlin on February 20, 1889. He married Enole Biarnez, who had been born in Bordeaux on October 6, 1827 and died in Berlin on January 3, 1889.
Mendelssohn played the organ and composed for it from the age of 11 to his death. His primary organ works are the Three Preludes and Fugues, Op. 37 (1837), and the Six Sonatas, Op. 65 (1845).
On first hearing the 1838 F Major Sonata, one recognizes melodies and passages that resemble other well-known Mendelssohn creations. While there are substantial contrasts between feeling and effect throughout, the three movements hold together nicely and the work remains coherent.
