Mendelssohn: Pieces
built 789 days ago
Mendelssohn wrote the concert overture The Hebrides (Fingal's Cave) in 1830, inspired by visits he made to Scotland around the end of the 1820s, although its main theme is now known to have been sketched before this. These visits ... inspired his Symphony No 3, The Scottish, which was written intermittently between around 1830 and 1842. The piece, whilst 'atmospheric' in the ethos of Romanticism, does not include any actual Scottish folk melodies.
In addition to the literary works of Goethe, Mendelssohn found inspiration in the works of English playwright William Shakespeare. At the age of 17, he composed the Overture to A Midsummer Night's Dream, Op. 21, based on the Shakespeare's play. The piece featured lush orchestration, and it is widely considered one of the most beautiful works of the Romantic period.
After his visit to London in 1832, Mendelssohn was commissioned by the Philharmonic Society to compose a symphony, an overture and a vocal piece for the sum of 100 guineas. He returned in April 1833 with the Italian Symphony and not one but two overtures; the concert aria 'Infelice'... was not to be written for another year.
A piece by the pope’s older brother was played at a concert Thursday evening in the pontiff’s honor along compositions by Mozart, Liszt, Wagner and Mendelssohn. The music was performed by the Munich Philharmonic Orchestra and directed by Christian Thielemann.
