Mendelssohn: Concerts
built 805 days ago
The Mendelssohn Choir of Pittsburgh is the choir of choice for the Pittsburgh Symphony. The 120-voice Choir is renowned for its versatility of repertoire. The Mendelssohn has traveled to Carnegie Hall and Lincoln Center, has toured internationally and presents an annual concert series.
Mendelssohn penned two hundred musical compositions, his violin concerto being acknowledged one of the best. He is regarded as the consummate nineteenth century writer of oratorios. Notwithstanding his German identity, his music is performed more in England to this day than in any other nation.
The most famous of Mendelssohn's violin works is the Concerto in E minor, a rather late work which he completed in 1844. He did write another concerto, in D minor, at the age of 13 in 1822, as well as three sonatas; one in F minor and two in F Major that date from 1820, 1825, and 1838 respectively. The 1838 Sonata was only rediscovered in 1952 by the late Yehudi Menuhin.

The essential sunniness of Mendelssohn's muse is well conveyed in these cheering readings of the two cello sonatas. James Kreger's tone, rich without being overpowering, is well complemented by Gerald Robbins's immaculately turned piano playing. The Variations concertantes and Op. 109 Song without Words provide equally attractive fillers."
