The Grizzlies Business Operations Team offers a valuable learning experience to University of Memphis students pursuing a career in professional sport. Grizzlies staff members encompassing positions such as Event Operations, Human Resources, Marketing, Media Relations, Sponsorship and Ticket Sales and Service departments provide University of Memphis students a taste of what it like to work in the NBA. Students accepted for the Grizzlies/U of M Sports Career Mentorship program are placed with participating Grizzlies staff members based on the student expressed career interest, availability of staff and area of expertise. The Grizzlies staff member commits to a minimum of one e-mail or phone conversation with the student per week, one face-to-face meeting per month and a minimum of eight hours of job shadowing during the semester, including at least one home game. During its first two years, thirty U of M students majoring in Sport Leisure Commerce participated in the Grizzlies U of M Sports Career Mentorship Program

Memphis Grizzlies Brown won the NBA Coach of the Year Award in the next season when the Grizzlies made the NBA playoffs for the first time in team history in the spring of 2004 as the sixth seed in the Western Conference. Hubie Brown stepped down as head coach during the 20044-05 season. West hired TNT analyst and former coach Mike Fratello to replace Brown. The franchise record improved and the team advanced to the postseason for the second consecutive season. Memphis Grizzlies had an active 2005 offseason in which they lost some players like Bonzi Wells, Jason Williams, Stromile Swift and James Posey, but the club acquired veteran players such as Damon Stoudamire, Bobby Jackson and Eddie Jones. As of 2005, the Grizzlies are the only team representing Memphis , Tennessee in the United States four major sports leagues.
