Melina Mercouri, the last Greek Goddess The City of Athens’ Cultural Centre Melina Mercouri in Thissio is housed in an impressive industrial building where the Poulopoulos hat factory used to be. It has been listed as a protected building since 1985. It is a stone building with a simple architectural design and tiled roof. The use of iron on the windows and facades is interesting as is its trapezoid shape. The Centre organizes temporary exhibitions, events and concerts.
The Life of Melina Merkouri Production of a multimedia CD-ROM presenting the life and work of Melina Mercouri, a charismatic person that became a myth in Greece and abroad on both the artistic and the political scene. The CD-ROM integrates a large database of information on her life and activities. A three-dimensional cube object has been used as the main interface and navigation paradigm. Each side of the cube presents a different aspect of Melina Mercouri's life.
Melina Mercouri is ... a singer [video extract n° 7]. In 1949, she sings one of her first songs - Hartino to Fengaraki - in a Greek production of A Streetcar Named Desire [video extract n° 8]. In 1955, 1960 and 1961, she sings Agapi pou 'gines [video extract n° 1], Ta pedia tou Pirea (international success) [video extract n° 2] and Feggari mou, Agapi mou, from the movies Stella, Never on Sunday and Phaedra. At the end of the Sixties, Melina Mercouri will record in France several discs (one in Greek language : Melina Mercouri, three others in French language : Je suis grecque, L’oeillet rouge et Si Melina m’était contée, all remastered) which will be great popular successes [video extract n° 9].
Melina at the Acropolis Melina Mercouri was a powerful and very beautiful woman. She was well-known as a film star, a singer and a politician. She was born in 1925 and her family was very famous because her grandfather was Mayor of Athens for several years.

Certainly Melina Mercouri was known for seeking continuity in time and history on the basis of ‘now as then’ but the continuity of democracy cannot be based on just keeping a myth about a past alive. True democratic life requires an active cultural life so that people are informed and can reflect upon different political options on the basis of a common reality. Being furthermore a part of the European Union, Greece can contribute insofar as this cultural heritage can be shared with the others as common base of European and world identity.
