Melatonin has been found to have anti-apoptotic activity in the thymus. Melatonin inhibits apoptosis in the thymus as well as in cultured dexamethasone-treated thymocytes (a standard model for the study of apoptosis). It is thought to do so by down-regulating the glucocorticoid receptor.

Melatonin is ... a very powerful antioxidant. In one study, melatonin was 60 times more effective than Vitamin C or water-soluble Vitamin E in protecting DNA from damage. Preliminary evidence suggests that it may help strengthen the immune system.

Melatonin may be useful in the treatment of fibromyalgia. In a small, uncontrolled preliminary study, 3 mg of melatonin at bedtime was found to reduce tender points associated with this disorder. Pain and fatigue improved only slightly.25

Melatonin has shown equivocal effects for two conditions related to SAD: subsyndromal seasonal affective disorder (S-SAD) and weather associated syndrome (WAS). According to the one reported study, use of melatonin improved some symptoms but worsened others. 84
