Melatonin: Effects
built 805 days ago
Melatonin is one of the least toxic substances known. In one extensive clinical trial, a high dose of 75 milligrams of melatonin per day was given to 1400 women in the Netherlands for up to four years with no ill effects.
Melatonin causes almost immediate drowsiness, and should not be consumed with depressants or alcohol. Melatonin is generally thought to be safe when used on occasion; but the long-term effects of melatonin usage are unknown.
Melatonin has been found to be helpful when used with dogs who have "thunder-phobia," other noise-related reactions and other stressful situations. Melatonin has been used effectively to reduce seizures in dogs that seize between 11:00 PM and 6:00 AM. Quite a few members of our Canine Epilepsy community have ... discovered that it seems to lessen the frequency and/or severity of seizures at other times of the day.
