Melatonin: Body
built 817 days ago
Melatonin has been recommended for the treatment of insomnia and jet lag, yet little is known about its long term effects on the body, and some in the medical community have questioned its safety. Researchers at the University of Lodz in Poland. evaluated the effects of melatonin administration on sleep and routine blood chemistry in elderly women. The study was performed on 14 women aged from 64 to 80 years. Melatonin 2 mg was given at 7 pm nightly for 6 months. Before and after melatonin treatment blood samples were taken in the morning after an overnight fast.

Melatonin's diurnal rhythm is synchronized by the light-dark cycle, and is strongly affected by day length, artificial illumination, electromagnetic energy, exercise, and other factors. Melatonin rhythms ... reflect the biological process of aging. Secretion levels peak in childhood and diminish over an individual's lifespan. Since melatonin exhibits strong regenerative and integrative influences over the body, gradual decreases may explain the age-dependent weakening of immune function which can lead to malignancy, senescence, and eventually death.

Melatonin can stimulate the helper T cells to make immune stimulating compounds. (7) Some of these compounds are among the opioid messengers made by the body. These compounds have the ability to help regulate a key immune system gland, the thymus. They ... help in dealing with the effects of stress.
Melatonin tablets help reduce the effects of jet lag. Often, after a long flight, jet lag leaves you feeling overwhelmed with fatigue, sluggish, irritable, disoriented or nauseated. By regulating the time your body produces melatonin, you can lessen these symptoms.
Melatonin may be able to help these children. Since it is the primary chemical in the body that helps to induce sleep, children who suffer from insomnia often find that Melatonin restores their normal sleep cycle and helps them to be more awake and alert during the day.
Melatonin Melatonin is actually a hormone that is secreted by the pineal gland which is situated in the centre of your brain. Melatonin which is stimulated by the onset of darkness at nighttime is a very important factor in the human body’s circadian cycle or your internal body clock. (more…)
