Melanoma: Body
built 641 days ago
Melanoma is dangerous because it is often not caught early enough. If diagnosed and treated early, it is not deadly. But if not caught, it can spread quickly to other layers of the skin and onto other organs in the body, at which point it's very difficult to treat.

Melanoma that has spread to other areas of the body is a very difficult cancer to treat successfully. It usually does not respond well to chemotherapy. Sadly, those diagnosed with metastatic melanoma survive only about a year after diagnosis.

Surgical removal, or excision, of the melanoma is the most effective treatment. Surgical removal may be all that is needed for early (thin) melanomas that have not spread, or metastasized, to other parts of the body.
