Mega Man Zero

Despite being yet another recycled Game Boy Advance title, Mega Man Zero 3 hasn't gotten stale and old in his third iteration. It comes awful close, but the new levels and enemies, updated gameplay, and better difficulty tweaks keep the series up there in the "recommended" status. It's fun, challenging, and even with the nearly three year old GBA engine, the game looks great. If you haven't played the other two it might be tough to figure out what the heck's going on, but it shouldn't stop you from picking up the version with the best balance.
If you've played any of the Mega Man Zero games you may be asking what happened to past weapons like the spear or shield? They're in the game, but you don't have direct access to them. New to Mega Man Zero 4 is the Z-Knuckle. This interesting weapon allows you to steal enemy attacks at will. If Zero uses the Z-Knuckle to dispatch a flame throwing plant he'll gain a powerful flame blast. Or if he happens to use it to kill one a shield bearing enemy he'll gain a deflector shield.

Mega Man might be old, but he's one tough little midget. Back in his heyday, he ran through a gauntlet of action platformers, foiling the ever-nefarious Dr. Wily and his band of unique henchmen over and over again. Unfortunately, there was one recurring frustration with Mega Man: his adventures had become too repetitive, each new game simply a mirror of the last.
Mega Man Zero screams quality. The art direction is very good. The sprites are drawn and animated very well. When enemies are sliced they drop to the floor via Mode 7 scaling. Enemies bosses ... scale for a more graphical flair. There are a number of special effects and good use of the color palette.

Mega Man Zero takes place in the same world as Mega Man X only years into the future where X and Zero are reveered as legends. But years have passed and Zero seems out of comission. He's later found by Ciel, who makes him operational again. Now questions arise such as where X might be. Not only that but X is presumed to be evil and up to no good. Now Zero is going to find out.

Mega Man fans are familiar with the letter S. S stands for "sequel." In the case of Z-grade sequels like Mega Man X6, S can ... stand for something else entirely. And then there's the other S-word that fans know well: spin-off.
