Mega Man Zero 3 is set in a world called "Neo Arcadia" that has been created as a utopia for humans and Reploids (robots). This new chapter continues the adventure of the series’ title hero, Zero and his Reploid allies in the Resistance group who are fighting for peace. In Mega Man Zero 3, Zero encounters a malevolent new Reploid called Omega who has unleashed the evil power of the Dark Elf to brainwash the Resistance in order to take over Neo Arcadia. As the only one who has escaped the brainwashing attack, Zero must fight to save his allies and Neo Arcadia.

As long as you don't mind the intense difficulty, Mega Man Zero 2 is a fun game that offers plenty of incentive to play through it multiple times. The story fleshes out many of the mysteries of the entire Mega Man series, but a few of the juicier plot tidbits aren't revealed until you play through the game a second time on the hard difficulty setting. The game gives you six save files to use, and it's not a bad idea to use one of them to practice each mission before you run through it on your main file. That way, you have a better shot at gaining suit upgrades and EX attacks, which makes it easier to defeat some of the later bosses in the game. The reploid base acts as a hub for the 16 different missions in the game. Once you've completed a level, you can replay it over and over again to go back and get whatever cyberelves you may have missed.

While a side-scrolling action game, Mega Man Zero has definite role-playing game elements. For starters, Zero's skills improve over time. As Zero uses the sword, he will eventually be able to make double--and subsequently triple--attacks. Between missions, Zero can explore the resistance base, talk to people, and "download" various skills via the new Cyber Elf system. There are 70 Cyber Elves scattered throughout the game, and they're broadly lumped into three groups: Nurse Elves that heal, Hacker Elves that alter surroundings, and Animal Elves that boost Zero's abilities. Zero can even feed his Cyber Elves, and increase their power.

For visuals and sound, Mega Man Zero 2 has the same sort of beautiful graphics and Super NES-style music that its predecessor had. The game's levels are huge and often expand as far upward as they do forward. Minor details, like neon outlines in the walls and flickering lights on computer displays, are just as easy to spot as the leafy trees and hazy pools of water that form the general theme of each level. The game ... makes use of full-screen fog and steam effects similar to those found in Nintendo's much-lauded RPG, Golden Sun. Bosses frequently take up more than a quarter of the screen, and some of their attacks simply assault the screen with explosions and giant laser blasts. The animation is great too.

If you've played any of the other Mega Man Zero games, you already know how to play this one. The game's 16 levels are again organized in such a way that you can tackle eight of them in any order, with the remainder automatically occurring at the beginning, middle, and end of the story. Each level is an unforgiving mix of spike pits, slippery slopes, and split-second surprises, not counting all the gun-toting enemies that literally pop up at every opportunity. And, of course, there's an angry boss waiting at the end of each level. Compared to the previous game, the level designs in Mega Man Zero 4 are, perhaps, slightly less challenging. But at the same time, they're ... more inventive.

In Mega Man Zero 4, Zero and Ciel defend a caravan of human refugees from Neo Arcadia, which is no longer a safe place even for humans ever since Weil took over. They take refuge in Area Zero, the crash-site of debris from Eurasia in Mega Man X5. The humans at this point carry a distrust of Reploids, but the actions of Zero and the Resistance eventually help build understanding between them. One of them ... a reporter named Neige, is close to a Neo Arcadian Reploid named Craft. Weil intends to destroy Area Zero using his spaceborne cannon, Ragnarok. But Craft takes Ragnarok and turns it against Neo Arcadia.
