Mega Man X: Games

Maverick Hunter X, the 2006 remake of the original Mega Man X ... walked a different path. The Day of Σ, an unlockable prologue OVA incluced on the UMD, showed Light actually speaking with X during his creation for multiple times, while he sealed him away in the original game without activating him once. Furthermore, Light's intention of sealing X was different from the original SNES Mega Man X game. Instead of fearing he would become a threat because of his immaturity, he actually feared that it would be the humans who were immature and not ready to live together with a robot that close to them by the time he finished his work. Instead, he wanted him to fight for the people of the future and guide them to peace and happiness.

In each Mega Man X game, X can find upgrade capsules made by Dr. Light before he died. Each of these capsules contains a helmet part, arm armor, body armor, or leg armor. A hologram of Dr. Light greets X and explains the capabilities of the part in question before granting it to him. Until Mega Man X5, each of these four parts was part of a single suit of upgraded armor. In X5, X6 and X8, there are multiple suits of upgraded armor, each with different abilities. For example, the Shadow Armor allows X to stick to walls and not get hurt by spikes, and the Blade Armor allows X to dash greater distances and strengthens the Z-Saber.

For all seven of you that have never played a single Mega Man game, here is a brief overview of how each Mega Man X title works. You take control of Mega Man X and, in games X3-X6, Zero as they set out to save the world from evil Maverick Reploids. Each game is broken up into several levels that are each capped off with a unique boss. After defeating a boss character you acquire their weapon and can use it throughout the rest of the game. The whole game is then capped off with a final level that thrusts you back into combat with each boss character and culminates in a confrontation with the mastermind behind all of the evil in the world. This is really a simple formula that has worked for the Mega Man franchise from day one and the key to success here is that the original gameplay is kept in tact for this new edition.

While the original Mega Man games were almost completely gameplay-oriented, the X series tries to introduce much more story. It’s fairly basic, and usually involves the evil Sigma hatching some dastardly plan, but it’s told through some nice anime-style cutscenes (starting with X3). The graphics in all of the games are vivid and well-designed, but you can notice a marked improvement starting with X4. Bosses get bigger, backgrounds get more detailed, and more enemies appear onscreen. There are interlacing problems at times, but they usually don’t detract from the gameplay. Voice samples ... get introduced in X4.
