Mega Man 5: Robot Masters
built 191 days ago
Brought to you by the Mega Man Naming Committee! While developing new bosses, the Mega Man Naming Committee had the choice of either Cowboy Man or Tomahawk Man for Mega Man 6. Cowboy Man got scalped at the last minute, so Tomahawk Man won the position of being blasted to bits by Mega Man. He stands in one place and throws tomahawks and feathers at you. Then he jumps around and does it again. It's strange, but it's almost like fighting a Native Crash Man. Whatever the case may be, Tomahawk Man was about as efficient as Yamato Man and Knight Man, and 9th place is as good as it gets for a predictable robot. The trick to beating this guy is to get the Cavalry Blade from Colonel Man or the Rifle Gun from The Rifleman. If you can't get either, try the Hand Gun you earned from Brisco County Jr. Man.

Just as the Robot Masters gave some claim to being "Masters" of their domain, Mega Man V marked the first time in a while that the special weapons could claim to be "special" in something other than the Special Olympics sense. Again, they were uniquely suited to the smaller screen, particularly Venus' sweeping Bubble Bomb that put ceiling-crawlers and flyers within easy reach. The Black Hole weapon obtained from Saturn was something else entirely, not only drawing smaller foes into its event horizon but bursting into an incendiary ring that damaged everything else. Impressive -- a weapon that sucked, but in Mega Man's favor. And the Salt Water, despite being the lamest weapon concept ever, had a controllable arc and split into pieces, making it a handy tool.

A Mega Man game lives or dies by how fun the pure platforming sections are, since that's really what players spend most of their time doing. If defeating Robot Masters and abusing their special weapon represents coitus, platforming is the foreplay that comprises the majority of successful lovemaking. And like the Carry Item and falling icicles of Dr. Wily's Revenge, Mega Man IV's levels are designed around clever and original platforming elements. Only now there are exactly zero disappearing blocks.

Mega Man 6 does have some negatives. The Storyline was rather disappointing. The Robot Tournament was cool, but Mr.X looked exactly like Dr.Wily except for the beard. That was way too obvious. Mega Man 6 is REALLY fun but just doesn't have that feel. The Dr.Wily Stage theme was a little disappointing too.
Back in Mega Man 2, there was a robot named Wood Man. He had the ability to shield himself with giant leaves. Now, Plant Man does the same thing. He jumps around in a easily recognizable pattern. So predictable, in fact, you can probably beat him without a scratch. Ever heard of the song "Plantman"? "Plantman knows where the plant still grows, plantman knows where the plant still grows..."

In Mega Man 2, Dr. Wily was defeated by Mega Man and thrown in jail. However, soon he escaped and had created eight brand new Robot Masters to help him try again in taking over the world. Once again, having a strong sense of justice, Mega Man sets off to stop Dr. Wily from trying to take over the world yet again.
