[W]ith her latest thriller, Ryan proves that she has versatility. Originally to star Nicole Kidman, “In the Cut” tells the story of Frannie Avery, an independent New York City writing professor who develops an intimate, sexual, and dangerous relationship with a mysterious detective named Malloy. Malloy is investigating a murder in Frannie neighborhood that may or may not be related to Frannie.

Ryan, who divides her time between Los Angeles and New York, is more likely to be seen hanging with gal pals like Sheryl Crow and Laura Dern. She might be spotted at the trendy Manhattan restaurant Man Ray (perhaps with Gwyneth Paltrow) or shopping with Carrie Fisher uptown at Barney's. In December, she partied late into the night with Kevin Spacey and Matt Dillon at the opening of the Prada store in New York's arty Soho district, where she recently spent $9 million on two 3,000-square-foot penthouse lofts that she'd planned to combine into a sprawling living space. Still, the actress has been keeping a generally low profile on both coasts, in part because of an accused stalker who allegedly broke into a Malibu home he thought was Ryan's.

Witherspoon married Ryan Phillippe, her Cruel Intentions co-star, on 5 June 1999. They have a daughter Ava (b. 1999) and a son Deacon (b. 2003). Some sources report incorrectly that Witherspoon was born in Tennessee; Witherspoon's family has lived in Tennessee, but she was born in New Orleans.
