By way of education Meg studied at Bethel High School, Connecticut with the family having moved to the area in 1974. She was known in her schooldays as Peggy Hyra. Meg was her High School's Homecoming Queen in 1977 when the original queen was suspended. She went on to study journalism at New York University and majored in the subject.

That doesn't mean that Ryan, who has referred to herself as a "seeker," intends to stop searching. "No, you just keep going," she affirms. "I guess I've just gotten more and more comfortable with questions. And letting those questions just stand. There are probably no answers to anything. So you have to be OK with just asking the questions and moving on."
