Wanango Country Club really began in 1912 when two groups of community leaders in Franklin and Oil City got together and held a meeting to decide to build what is the present day location of Wanango. The Nursery Club and the Oil City Golf Club acquired the land through options on land held by Mr. S.Y. Ramage and Mr. C.H. Lay from the Venango Oil and Land Co. The Oil City Golf Club was located near where is presently Bouquin Circle. It was formed in 1899. A relationship with Wanango and Donald J. Ross began in 1912 to design the first nine holes of the course.
