Knights were the heavy soldiers of the medieval battle field wearing a full suit of armor and a sword. They ... had secondary weapons such as maces, battle axes or morning stars. Many images of medieval knights show the knight carrying a shield, but this is inaccurate, against crossbows shields were worthless and the late medieval knight preferred agility over defense. The understanding also that knights were mounted on horses (perhaps the horse shaped chess piece of the knight lends force to this) is also inaccurate, the knight was a foot soldier able to use a horse when needed.

Oddly enough, stirrups played a very important role in the evolution of medieval warfare. Prior to the Medieval Ages, cavalrymen had difficulty controlling their horses and maintaining their balance. The solution to this problem was found in a few leather straps.

Textiles were the central focus of medieval decor. Light, portable, and multifunctional, textiles could be used as room dividers, wall hangings, floor or bed coverings, or protection from the cold. Colorful fabrics added brightness and life to dark rooms where glassless windows were of necessity small and shuttered against the weather.
