The goals of sacred and secular early medieval composers were originally different. The sacred composers sought to set the Bible to music and to bring a more "heavenly" aspect to church than could be obtained by simply reading the Bible. Sacred music was originally composed to pay homage to God. Secular music, on the other hand, was composed solely for its entertainment value, whether for dance or to express love. At least in the early medieval times, sacred composers were formally trained in music and secular composers were usually not, as mentioned above. So not only did the two forms of music serve different purposes, the ... represented a musical separation in society between the formally trained and the untrained, or even better, the rich and the poor.

Weddings during medieval times saw the origin of several modern traditions and customs. There was more to the Middle Ages than just castles, chivalry, and fancy colours. It was a time of developement for many social and marriage customs followed by brides today. This era between the fall of the Roman Empire and the Reformation was unique and through it all, faith was the ever-present catalyst for artistic, intellectual, social, and political developments. Medieval marriage was still the province of the Church, and the sacrament of matrimony was central to Christian doctrine.

Town houses in medieval times possessed many similar features to their rural counterparts. The design of the medieval town house was determined largely by lack of space. Land in towns was valuable, and the normal medieval town plot was long and narrow, running back from the street frontage; each property had a long narrow garden or yard at the rear. A careful study of nineteenth and early twentieth century maps of Dartford High Street reveals the existence of clear linear medieval house plots, gardens and courtyards fossilised in the urban landscape.

Benches and stools were commonly used for sitting in medieval times - only the rich and important, or perhaps occasionally the privileged head of the house, ever used an actual chair. Folding chairs were popular amongst the medieval aristocracy, since they could easily be transported when on the move.
