Recent reports by the National Institutes of Medicine indicate the scope and severity of health disparities in minority communities. According to the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services, Latinos have one of the worst health status in this country, when adjusted for age. Latinos have higher rates of cancers of the stomach, liver, cervix and biliary tract. Two million Hispanic-American adults have diabetes, yet it is estimated that one in three is not aware of the condition. New cases of AIDS are reported three times as frequently in Hispanics as in non-minority Americans; and three in four Mexican children younger than 17 years of age have gingivitis. According to experts, the health status of Hispanics in this country often deteriorates due to factors such as changes in diet and physical activity.

Stanford’s Sports Medicine Program is dedicated to providing the best possible medical care for the student athlete’s injuries and illnesses. The program is unique in its team approach to health care. The Athletic Trainers, Team Physicians, Physical Therapists and Sport Scientists all collaborate on the care provided to each athlete. Athletic trainers must report the team’s injury and illness status to the coach each day so they need to be aware of each athlete’s medical conditions and injuries that affect their participation. The team physicians provide diagnosis, treatment, arrange for consultations, order lab tests, x-rays and MRIs, and make decisions on the participation status. Physical therapists design specific programs for rehabilitation and communicate directly with the athletic trainer, physician, and strength and conditioning coaches. Sport Scientists work with coaches and athletes to test and analyze athletes using state-of-the-art motion capture, biomechanics and physiology equipment.
