This portable medical dictionary allows medical professionals to easily explain complicated terminology in ways ordinary, untrained consumers can understand. The dictionary contains more than 45,000 terms, as well as diagrams and illustrations which enhance the definitions of those terms. Dorland's Medical Dictionary, regarded as the first modern medical dictionary was published in 1890 as the American Illustrated Medical Dictionary. In 1898, a pocket edition called the American Pocket Medical Dictionary consisting of 500 pages was published. After the death of editor William Alexander Newman Dorland, AM, MD in 1956 the name of dictionaries was re-titled to slot in his name and the dictionaries became popular by the new name. The recent version, the 30th edition is available in electronic version.
