Mechassault

The MechWarrior series, of which Mechassault is an extension of, began and has stayed primarily on the PC, with the exception of some titles of varying success on the SNES and PSone. The series, spanning four games and two real-time strategy titles on the PC, has long been the stalwart of Mech simulations in the video game world, offering loads of customization and combat set in a futuristic world. This fact is partially why the straight-up action that Mechassault offers is pleasantly refreshing. There is little customization beyond the difficulty setting and the mech to be used in the mission. But perhaps for that reason, Mechassault is visually impressive and one of the best action games available on the Xbox.

It seems the Mechassault team is going to bring their popular version of online Mech combat to the Nintendo handheld. The new Mechassault: Phantom War game will feature WiFi play, of course, with 20 types of vehicles. The touch screen will be used to sneak into enemy territory and hijack enemy mechs.

Mechassault has some awesome graphics. The overall environment of the game is outstanding. Mech's used in snow missions are covered with snow. Non-mech targets are small in comparison and well rendered to provide an excellent sense of scale.

Sound - One of the key points of Mechassault's audio presentation is the voice acting. Not only is it used during cut scenes, but comm transmissions can be heard during missions, something that not only keeps you informed, but ... adds extraordinarily to the game’s atmosphere and story, similar to those found in the excellent PC sim series, Descent Freespace. The rest of the sound effects are also quite good - from the clunk of each mech’s foot as it hits the ground, to the individual weapons fire, it’s clear that Day One didn’t throw together random sound bites in order to top off the sound effects package. Sadly, the music isn’t anything great. There are only four or five tracks in the game based on what area of the planet the mission takes place on, and it does begin to grate after a time. But the overall presentation is quite well done.

Mechassault: Phantom War could have been a hell of a lot better. But, on the flip side, it ... could have been completely worse. The graphics and multiplayer options should've been weighed out more, but are made up for with excellent gameplay and decent Wi-Fi against a friend. If robot bashing is beating heavily anywhere in your body, it's time to settle in with a few rounds of this game. You won't be sorry.

There is no real music to Mechassault other then the rumbling of machine guns and exploding of missles and cracking of energy guns at your disposal. Thats all you need in a game like this. The only annoying thing is the voice acting of the people on your radio telling you what the hell to do. Take that out and there isn't anything that beats the sound quality of Mechassault.
