Mechanical Engineering is an engineering discipline that involves the application of principles of physics for analysis, design, manufacturing, and maintenance of mechanical systems. It requires a solid understanding of key concepts including mechanics, kinematics, thermodynamics and energy. Mechanical engineers use these principles and others in the design and analysis of automobiles, aircraft, heating & cooling systems, watercraft, manufacturing plants, industrial equipment and machinery, medical devices and more.

With both a bachelor of science and a master of science in Mechanical Engineering from Lehigh University, Swain has contributed his knowledge and talent to Synergis customers since 1997. He is a long-time certified Inventor Expert, having been among the first group of experts to take and pass the Autodesk Inventor Certified Expert exam in 2003. Prior to joining Synergis, Swain worked in the consumer electronics and automotive industries as a design engineer, a test engineer, and a CAD administrator. In addition to the regular classes he teaches at Synergis, Swain has taught design at the college level, and presented training sessions at several Autodesk University conferences, where the most talented professionals come together around the subject of design.
Through EDGE, Mechanical Engineering offers its MSME degree. The department has nationally-recognized expertise in four major areas of research: mechanics, materials and manufacturing; energy and fluids; systems and dynamics; and design. The department's state-of-the-art laboratories and computing facilities support externally funded research in all four of these areas.
