From the time of Muhammad, Mecca was besieged on various occasions. It was taken by the Egyptians in the 13th century. In the 16th century control passed to Turkey. From 1517 the sharifs, or descendants of Muhammad through Hasan, son of Muhammad's son-in-law Ali, governed Mecca for the Turks. The latter were driven from the city in 1916 by Grand Sharif Husein ibn Ali, later first king of Al Hij�z. In 1924 the city was occupied by Abdul Aziz ibn Saud, then sultan of Najd (Nejd), who made Mecca the religious capital of Saudi Arabia.

Mecca is signed to Frontiers Records Europe. Some of Mecca's label mates are Toto, Survivor, Journey and Styx to name a few. Started in 2002 by Joe Vana the group garnered more than one can mention in the way of magazine covers and enormous critical acclaim abroad since 2002. Mecca's self titled first release received scores of 96/100 or above on almost 60 separate websites and was the album of the year on many more for 2002. Melodicrock.com, the industry's top website gave Mecca a 100/100 and only 7 other albums in their history have achieved that status. The first album had the rhythm section from Hell with Drummer Shannon Forrest (Toby Keith, Brooks and Dunn, Faith Hill & many many others) and Multiple Grammy Award Winning Bass Legend David Hungate (Cher, Boz Scaggs, Chet Atkins, Brooks and Dunn, and many more) to drive the band.

South Africa's Defence Minister Mosiuoa Lekota said the Government welcomed the power-sharing deal reached in Mecca between Fatah and Hamas. It would "be very wise if the sanctions of the EU, the US were lifted to encourage the strengthening of this coalition," Mr. Lekota said during a parliamentary briefing. "We think this would create a better atmosphere for the solution of the ongoing Palestinian-Israeli conflict," he said. (AP)

The harsh conditions of the Arabian peninsula usually meant a constant state of conflict between the tribes, but once a year they would declare a truce and converge upon Mecca in an annual pilgrimage. This journey was intended for religious reasons, to pay homage to the shrine, and to drink from the Well of Zamzam. However, it was ... the time each year that disputes would be arbitrated, debts would be resolved, and trading would occur at Meccan fairs. These annual events gave the tribes a sense of common identity and made Mecca extremely important throughout the peninsula.[11]

Shiny and new, Mecca makes you feel like Somebody. The focal point of the black and silver room is the huge, circular bar, where bartenders work as fast as they can, mixing up specialty cocktails for the largely gay clientele. Oysters on the half shell are served with a delicious traditional mignonette, and the crispy fried calamari will have you ordering seconds. Chef Lynn Sheehan has been around the S.F. restaurant scene for a while, and she knows what works. The menu is eclectic, and if you stay for more than drinks and bar food, you`ll find the entrees -- particularly the wonderful pizzas û far from disappointing.
