Mecca: Entering Mecca
built 646 days ago
Entering Mecca (located right across from the new mammoth Safeway on Market Street) is like taking a cheap trip to the hipper side of New York. Very dark inside, there's a large circular bar where you can enjoy martinis (complete with two huge olives--always!)while eyeing up the talent sitting far across from you. That's part of the Mecca experience; blatantly watching others is fully acceptable and no doubt will such attention will be reciprocated.

For Muslims, a pilgrimage to Mecca is required as one of the five pillars of the faith. Every year about three million gather for the major pilgrimage, or Hajj, during the Muslim month of Dhu'l-Hijja, and many more perform the minor pilgrimage, or Umrah, which may be performed at any time of year. Few non-Muslims have ever seen the rites and rituals of the hajj (non-Muslims are strictly prohibited from entering Mecca and Medina).

Few non-Muslims have ever seen the rites and rituals of the Hajj, as non-Muslims are strictly prohibited from entering Mecca and Medina. Roadblocks are stationed along roads leading to the city. The most famous incident of a non-Muslim visiting Mecca was the visit by the British explorer Sir Richard Burton in 1853. Burton disguised himself as an Afghani Muslim to visit and write Personal Narrative of a Pilgrimage to Al Madinah and Mecca.
The city is revered by Muslims for containing the holiest site of Islam, the Masjid al-Haram (The Sacred Mosque) of Mecca. A pilgrimage to Mecca during the week of the Hajj is one of the Five Pillars of Islam, a sacred duty that is required of all able-bodied Muslims who can afford to go, at least once in their lifetime. People of other faiths are forbidden from entering the city.
WARNING: Non-Muslims are [S]trictly prohibited from entering Mecca. The penalty is deportation from the country. Documentation will be checked upon entry and anyone not showing proof of being Muslim will be denied entry.
