maya1.jpg (6105 bytes) The Maya had a sophisticated system of writing. It was developed in order to record their transition of power through the generations. This writing was composed of inscriptions on stone and wood, and was usually used on the inside or outside of their architecture. The books they made were called folding tree books. These books were made from fig tree bark and usually placed in the royal tombs. Few of these books have survived due in part to the tropical climate of the region.

Hands down, the most elegant bathroom along the Riviera Maya has to be at this all-inclusive. Walk in from the lovely lobby bar and you see a babbling contemporary fountain through wooden slats, the soothing sound making it feel more like a spa than a public restroom. Huge ornamental vases sit on top of high marble blocks. It’s so pretty you might want to spend your vacation right here.
The syllabic structure of the Maya language allows an ending consonant in a syllable. In fact, the "root" or most basic form of Maya words consists of a consonant, a vowel, and a consonant (CVC). In order to "spell" a word of this form, the Maya scribes used two syllabic signs. The first sign contains the beginning consonant and the vowel of the syllable. The second sign represents the ending consonant, and the vowel of this second sign is omitted by convention during reading. Most frequently the vowel of the second sign is equal to the vowel of the first sign.
