built 633 days ago
Federated Department Stores bought Marshall Field’s and all other stores owned by The May Department Stores Company in 2005. Federated converted all Marshall Field’s stores, as well as most other stores in the May fold, to the Macy’s nameplate on September 7, 2006.

Many of May’s department stores eventually will be converted to the Macy’s name as Federated accelerates its strategy of creating a nationwide brand that would give it pricing leverage with suppliers. The transaction ... would bring together the operator of Bloomingdale’s with May’s Marshall Field’s, Lord & Taylor and Hecht’s chains.

Federated Department Stores Inc. of Cincinnati is moving forward with plans to convert the majority of May stores into Macy's, industry analysts and retail experts said. May's chains include Famous-Barr, Lord & Taylor and Marshall Field's.
The long-awaited announcement erases the last vestige of May, which ... owned homegrown chain Hecht's, Chicago staple Marshall Field's and a string of other mid-priced department stores across the country. Its $11 billion merger with Federated began last February. Later, Federated said it would either convert May's stores into Macy's or Bloomingdale's stores or simply close them.

Undoubtedly, they would still face enormous pressures on all sides, since department stores continue to wrestle with an erosion in their market shares against their many new rivals. Moreover, a proposed combination likely would draw heavy scrutiny from antitrust regulators, particularly in those instances in which the two together would have multiple stores in shopping malls. May outbid Federated to buy the 62-store Marshall Field's chain for $3.2 billion last year, which could heighten the hurdles, said one person familiar with the discussions.
