German researchers from the Max Planck Institute have made a new material that changes color with temperature or humidity. They used ion bombardment and gold metallization to make new particles that could lead to amazing car finishes or cosmetics.
The Max-Planck Institute of Immunobiology (MPI-IB) is an international and interdisciplinary research institution that conducts basic research in key areas of modern biology. At the MPI-IB, molecular immunologists, developmental geneticists, cell biologists and biochemists have been brought together to investigate the generation and function of the immune system, development of vertebrate embryos, cell signalling and the regulation of gene expression. State-of-the-art technologies and model organisms are used to unravel the mechanisms underlying these biological processes.

The Max Planck Institute for Limnology performs ecological research on inland waters. It has presently two departments and two independent research groups, which encompass the fields of evolutionary ecology, physiological ecology, stream ecology, and tropical ecology at the land-water interface of large rivers in Brazil.
Research at the Max Planck Institute for Human Cognitive and Brain Science (MPI CBS) revolves around human cognitive abilities and cerebral processes, with a focus on language, music, and action. Studies look into the perception of language; music; actions (and their outcome); the planning and generation of language and activity; and the interaction between, and common functional principles of, generation and perception in various cognitive fields.
