Milford, Mass., January 5, 2007 – Waters Corporation (NYSE:WAT) announced today that the world-renowned Max Planck Institute is enhancing its research on neurodegenerative diseases by adding a Waters® Synapt High Definition MS™ (HDMS) System to its complement of research technologies. The Institute’s Department of Cellular Biochemistry recently took delivery of the Synapt™ HDMS System to study the role of proteins in causing brain-wasting diseases including Huntington’s Disease.

The aim of the Max Planck Institute of Biophysics in Frankfurt is to understand the physical principles and molecular mechanisms of life, in particular those that involve cellular membranes and the proteins within them. Membrane proteins play a central role in many biological and medically relevant processes. About 170 scientists and support staff work in three departments to investigate the structure of membrane proteins and their function in native or reconstituted biological membranes.

Scientists from the Max Planck Institute for Plasma Physics will use the new system for realistic simulations of turbulence in fusion devices, contributing to energy research in support of the world-wide ITER fusion project. Astrophysical projects will include simulations ofthe cosmological structure formation in the Universe, complex interacting processes in supernovae and their consequences for cosmology,gravitational collapses and gravitational waves, and cosmological tests to decipher the nature of dark energy.
