Max Bygraves was the son of poor parents in London's East End docklands. His father was a professional boxer known as Battling Tom Smith, and a casual dockworker. Max went to St. Joseph's Primary school in Rotherhithe. Max showed talent as a child singer and performed a solo in Westminster Cathedral. He left school at 14 and became a messenger for W. S. Crawford, an advertising agency in High Holborn. When World War two broke out the advertising business collapsed and Max learnt the trade of carpenter and then volunteered for the RAF.

Born in southeast London in 1922, Max Bygraves, originally named Walter William Bygraves, sang as a boy in the school choir, until he left school at age 14, looking for a job. He pursued a variety of careers until enlisting in the RAF during World War II, following his older brother into the service. Impersonating one Max Miller while in the service gave the young man a glimpse of his future, and his new nickname.

Max Bygraves, a popular British comedian who once in a while entertained thoughts of a dramatic career, is costarred with Barbara Murray in A Cry from the Streets. The two play a pair of ingenuous social workers, assigned to one of the grubbiest neighborhoods in London. They join forces to help a group of castoff orphan children. The episodic structure of Cry from the Streets gave the film a semi-documentary feel, even though every incident herein was carefully written and rehearsed beforehand. Based on the novel The Friend in Need by Elizabeth Coxhead, the film was filmed in 1957, released in 1958, and reissued in some markets as Cry from the Street (singular) in 1959. ~ Hal Erickson, All Movie Guide

Bob Willis and Max Bygraves both go out. Because there aren't 3 weakest links, all the non-scorers (Wincey Willis, Morgan Freeman, Marilyn Manson and George Bush Snr) ... go out, leaving just Atherton, Winton, and Bruce Willis to battle it out.
