Team Alstare Suzuki Corona Extra rider Max Biaggi was on course for pole position in the 16-rider Superpole shoot-out today right up the moment the last rider, Noriyuki Haga, went out. At that stage, Max had lapped the 5.403 kilometre Brno circuit in 2:00.018 - a time that looked unbeatable. But then Haga blitzed his Yamaha round the undulating track in 1:59.603 and became the first rider ever to have lapped a Superbike at Brno in under two minutes. But Max is happy enough with second today, a front row grid position and is ready for two long 20 lap races tomorrow. His team mate Yukio Kagayama made a couple of small mistakes on his Superpole lap and ended sixth quickest - the same as last year. Third fastest in Superpole today is Troy Bayliss (Ducati), with series leader James Toseland (Honda) fourth.

Team Alstare Suzuki Corona Extra riders Yukio Kagayama and Max Biaggi made a steady start on the first day of qualifying at Brands Hatch yesterday. Yukio finished eighth quickest and Max ended the day fourteenth, but both are confident of significant improvement tomorrow. Yukio spent the day getting used to his Alstare Suzuki again after his Suzuka 8 hour success on a very different GSX-R1000 and took things steadily as a result. Max has never raced at Brands Hatch before, so used the time yesterday learning one of the most difficult tracks on the calendar. Series leader James Toseland (Honda) topped the standings yesterday - much to the delight of his home fans - with Troy Bayliss (Ducati) second, Ruben Xaus (Ducati) third and Troy Corser (Yamaha) fourth.

Team Alstare Suzuki Corona Extra rider Max Biaggi stunned everybody by winning the opening round of the Superbike World Champion ship in Qatar today. After a tremendous battle with James Toseland (Honda), Max took the lead with five laps to go and then superbly controlled the race from the front. In the end he ran out the winner by nearly one and a half seconds. Toseland took runner-up spot, with Lorenzo Lanzi (Ducati) third. By the time Max returned to the parc fermé, his emotions had got the better of him, but by the time he sprang up onto the podium, he had a huge smile on his face. His team mate Yukio Kagayama had front tyre problems in the race, but managed to finish a gritty fourth.

Word from Ducati Corse is that the plans to put Max Biaggi on a works-supported Ducati with the GSE squad have been abandoned. The Italian source of the original story linking Biaggi to the GSE team of Great Britain says that the problem is due to a conflict of interest that would make it impossible for Darrell Healey, owner of the GSE team, to field a team in opposition to the factory team of Troy Bayliss and Michel Fabrizio. Healey is the personal manager of Troy Bayliss.
