Mauritius is one of the first developing economies to have embarked on the creation of an Export Processing Zone in the 1970’s. The manufacturing sector has since been the driver of the country's economic development.
Mauritius is a risk area for infection with dengue fever (... known as "breakbone fever" from the muscular paroxysms sometimes induced). No vaccine is available. However no cases of dengue fever have been recorded in the country for several years now.

Mauritius combines almost all the characteristics for an ideal offshore location. It is an independent sovereign State with an economy of substance. It is politically stable and is equipped with state of the art telecommunication technologies. It has a pool of bilingual professionals trained in UK and other Western countries. The country has a dynamic banking system with only internationally renowned banks operating in an exchange control free environment. Mauritius has an expanding network of double taxation which allow for efficient tax planning.
Official U.S. representation in Mauritius dates from the end of the 18th century. An American consulate established in 1794 closed in 1911. It was reopened in 1967 and elevated to embassy status upon the country's independence in 1968. Since 1970, the mission has been directed by a resident U.S. ambassador.

Mauritius attained independence in 1968 and the country became a republic within the Commonwealth in 1992. Mauritius has been a stable democracy with regular free elections and a positive human rights record,[6] and has attracted considerable foreign investment earning one of Africa's highest per capita incomes.[7]
