In suppressing the uprising, the white leaders are just as ruthless as their Mau Mau counterparts, using lies, torture, murder and psychological manipulation--whatever gets the job done. Peter is disturbed by this conflict that's turned the men on both sides into animals, but he has no solution. He too is trapped in his role.

The colonial government created so-called pseudo-gangs composed of de-oathed and turned ex-Mau Mau and allied Africans, sometimes headed by white officers. They infiltrated Mau Mau ranks and made search and destroy missions. Pseudo-gangs ... included white settler volunteers who disguised themselves as Africans. The Pseudo-gang concept was a highly successful tactic against the Mau Mau.

The actual number of white civilians killed during the uprising was 32, while the number of African civilians killed by Mau Mau was officially put at 1,819. Of the insurgents, it is believed that 11,000 were killed and more than 1,000 were hanged as criminals.

The camps were set up in response to the brutal killings of white settlers, including women and children, by the Mau Mau. After the emergency was lifted in 1961 an official report determined that 32 whites were killed while more than 11,000 Africans died, many of them civilians. Others put the toll much higher.

The two massacres completed the demonisation of the Mau Mau in the minds of the settlers, and the white community was seized with a desire for revenge at any cost. The Mau Mau, with what the whites saw as their grisly oath-taking ceremonies, were seen as the incarnation of the settlers' fear of unbridled native savagery.
