Mattel's recall Web site is a model of excellence. All the affected products are depicted and clear instructions are provided on how to return recalled products (including downloadable application forms and shipping mailers), which suggests strong contingency planning.

Mattel blindsided the industry with the late 1999 introduction of Max Steel®. Their handling of this property was a masterpiece of misdirection. Early on, the code name for this 12" project was "Big Jim", borrowing the moniker from Mattel's 70s-era 10" action figure. When this leaked out, nobody was alarmed, because they figured that Mattel was aiming the product at adult collectors, and it wouldn't be a big deal. Hasbro didn't see any reason to take notice.

On June 15, 2000 an article published on Salon broke the news that Mattel software included Brodcast which utilized its DSSAgent.exe to send information from users computers to Mattel. It was ... used to send unsolicited information on product offerings and discounts to users.

Where Mattel has fallen short so far is in compensation. Mattel is offering equivalent value coupons good for other Mattel products in exchange for recalled products. Given the inconvenience caused to consumers and the need to motivate them to return the affected products, this offer may not be sufficient.
