In 2002, Kenseth registered a series-best five victories but sub-par performances and a lack of consistency kept the championship out of reach. Kenseth’s crew won its second straight Unocal 76/Rockingham World Pit Crew Competition with another world record, conducting a full pit stop in 16.81 seconds.

In 2002 Kenseth won the most races (five) and one pole, but inconsistency caused him to finish eighth in the final points. The DeWalt team won a second Unocal 76 World Pit Crew Competition.

Kenseth got his second chance in 1999 at the TranSouth 400 when Bobby Labonte suffered a fractured scapula in a practice accident at Darlington. After Labonte started the race, Kenseth replaced him during the team's first pit stop and went from 43rd to 10th when rain finally brought the race to a premature halt.

Kenseth was right. Fighting a car that he reported as being “way loose off the corner,” Kenseth fell almost immediately from the top 10 all the way back to the 25th position. In danger of losing a lap to the leader, Kenseth received the caution he so desperately needed on lap 70. After staying out to lead a lap, Kenseth came to pit road to take on four tires and received much needed adjustments.

Edwards confronted Kenseth after the race Sunday in Martinsville, Va.,in an exchange that could easily have turned ugly. (Remember, Edwards is the most buff guy in NASCAR, maybe all of racing, and Kenseth iswiry but all of5-9, 150-something.) The scene played out in front of a Speed Channel camera, and the video is available on youtube.
