1. Mandelbrot Set -- Images
   The Mandelbrot set is considered to be a single connected set. The following zoom sequence concentrates on one of the tendrils that runs from the top portion of the set. The zoom factor increases by a factor of 5 going from left to right, the zoom is about the center of each image. The center of this image on the complex plane is (-0.170337,-1.06506).
2. Latex (Tex)
   Latex is being widely used in typesetting books, papers in scientific journals, newsletters and articles. Latex is based on a typesetting system called Tex (pronounces tech), which was developed by Donald Knuth of the Stanford University. Tex, though powerful, by itself is difficult to use. So Leslie Lamport created a macro package for Tex to ease the creation of documents by providing a higher level of abstraction.

   Isaac Newton needed astronomical data to give a full theory of the motion of the moon, something which he had left incomplete in the first edition of the Principia. In the summer of 1694 Newton went by boat down the Thames to Greenwich for his first meeting with Flamsteed at the Royal Observatory. Newton persuaded Flamsteed to give him 50 of his observations of the moon, and he ... managed to get a promise of another 100 observations. In return Flamsteed made Newton promise only to use them personally and not to make them public. Continued pressure by Newton prised further observations from Flamsteed over the next months. 5. Refractive Index -- Materials
   Are the changes in refractive index wholly driven by an accelerated elimination of water from the surface of the stromal bed during photoablation? Immediately after photoablation of the corneal stroma with the ArF excimer laser, a pseudomembrane covers the treated region.34 35 According to some sources36 37 the excimer laser breaks up macromolecules (collagen and glycosaminoglycans [GAGs]) in the stroma, sparing the water. The resultant pseudomembrane is a combination of photoablated material that has not been completely ejected from the surface but remains adherent to the underlying substrate.34 35 The expulsion of depleted material from the treated surface may accelerate the dehydration by evaporation. It is possible that the refractometer is measuring the refractive index of the pseudomembrane, which has a refractive index greater than the normal stroma. The commercially available excimer lasers for refractive surgery operate at a variety of pulse frequencies (50–500 Hz). In practical terms, this means that some models take longer to ablate a set amount of tissue than do others.

8. Galois Theory -- Polynomials
   Content: Galois theory is the study of solutions of polynomial equations. You know how to solve the quadratic equation by completing the square, or by that formula involving plus or minus the square root of the discriminant . The cubic and quartic equations were solved ``by radicals'' in Renaissance Italy. In contrast, Ruffini, Abel and Galois discovered around 1800 that there is no such solution of the general quintic. Although the problem originates in explicit manipulations of polynomials, the modern treatment is in terms of field extensions and groups of ``symmetries'' of fields. For example, a general quintic polynomial over has 5 roots , and the corresponding symmetry group is the permutation group on these.
9. Isaac Newton -- Cambridge Platonist
   Isaac Newton explained the workings of the universe through mathematics. He described laws of motion and gravitation. These laws are math formulas that explain how objects move when a force acts on them. Isaac published his most famous book, Principia, in 1687 while he was a mathematics professor at Trinity College, Cambridge. In the Principia, Isaac explained three basic laws that govern the way objects move. He then described his idea, or theory, about gravity.

    Qcharts is a small division of quote.com, a Lycos company product line. The Qcharts product was not originally created by Lycos, but rather bought out at a later date.
