HipHopBookClub.com's Sponsor, AALBC.com Born on April 29, 1967, Percy Robert Miller, aka Master P, was the eldest of five children raised in a housing project in New Orleans’ Third Ward. On his way to being designated one of America’s 40 Richest People under 40 by Fortune Magazine, he got his start in 1994 by selling a self-produced album, “The Ghetto’s Tryin to Kill Me,” on his own label, No Limit Records, and right out of the trunk of his car.
Master P Like it or not, Master P is a certified legend in the rap game with one of the best rags-to-riches stories to date. Coming up poor in one of the most notorious projects -- Calliope Projects -- in New Orleans, he rose from poverty to become one of the richest music moguls in his hey day.
Born and raised in New Orleans' third ward Calliope Housing Projects, Master P always envisioned a better life for himself and his family. Raised by his grandparents, P eventually moved to Richmond, California with his mother in 1990. It was there that he applied a $10,000 check from a legal settlement toward the opening his own record store called No Limit Records, which evolved into his now-famous recording label.
Master P. Photo New Orleans rap kingpin Master P represents the best and worst of hip-hop's transformation into big business in the '90s. As Percy Miller, who rose from the projects to own and operate one of the country's most successful independent record companies, No Limit, he is a model of rugged individualism and old-fashioned American entrepreneurship.
Nolimit.jpg Master P began his career by distributing his records through a small Bay Area record label. He started out in Richmond, California where his mother resided. Despite being on the West Coast, he maintained his connections to the South through his father who remained in New Orleans. Master P signed his friends E A Ski & CMT, Sonya C (his then girlfriend), King George, Big Ed, Lil Ric and added his brother, Silkk the Shocker. Later he and Silkk (along with their brother C-Murder) would go on to form the group TRU. During the early 90's, P released many solo albums, with very little success.
