Maserati GranSport is the name for a new model celebrating the sporting soul at the heart of the Trident’s Grand Tourers (GTs) and will be unveiled to the world for the first time at the Geneva International Motor Show. The new car joins the Coupé and Spyder in the Maserati range and goes on sale this summer. The GranSport name hints at its thoroughbred GT spirit which provides instant performance for the driver. The GranSport name has special symbolic significance for Maserati as it was first used in the 1950s for the elegant two-litre coupe designed by the Carozzeria Frua on the chassis of the famous A6 G model.
Maserati Ghibli Spider The original Maserati Ghibli is a two-door, two-seater coupé released by Maserati in 1967. The V8-powered Ghibli was the most popular Maserati vehicle since the automaker withdrew from racing in the 1950s, and it outsold its two biggest rivals, the Ferrari Daytona and the Lamborghini Miura. It debuted at the 1966 Turin Motor Show.
2008 Maserati Quattroporte The Maserati Coupe, GranSport, GranSport Spyder and Quattroporte have engines, transmissions and other major components developed in conjunction with Ferrari. Maseratis are typically the least expensive and least extreme of the Italian exotic cars, with subdued yet seductive styling and strong performance. For 2007, the two-seat Spyder convertible is dropped from the line and replaced by a new, higher-performance GranSport Spyder. Changes to the other cars are minimal. The stunning Quattroporte (of Entourage fame) remains an alluring alternative to more staid German luxury sedans. Fiat controls Alfa Romeo, Ferrari and Maserati in one way or another.

With the introduction of a Spyder convertible and Coupé a few years ago, Italian exotic-car maker Maserati has a new rear-wheel-drive luxury sedan. Ready for sale in the United States in the summer of 2004, the Quattroporte blends expressive Italian styling with ambitious performance prospects. Ferrari is Maserati's parent company. The Maserati GranSport uses the Cambiocorsa six-speed electro-hydraulic transmission in which the gears are changed using paddles mounted behind the steering wheel, further enhancing the car’s sporting heritage. The Cambiocorsa system allows drivers to choose between various gear shifting modes (Normal, Sport, Automatic and Low Grip) using software developed specifically for the GranSport. In Sport mode the GranSport offers 35 per cent quicker gear changes than the Coupé and boasts automatic heeling-and-toeing to make dropping down a gear even faster. Thanks to the new Cambiocorsa software, the Maserati GranSport can sprint over a kilometre from standstill in 23 seconds flat.
Even though the styling of the Maserati Coupé is similar to the Spyder convertible, the two vehicles are considered separate models. The Coupé offers four-passenger seating, while the Spyder seats two occupants. Maserati's 390-horsepower, 4.2-liter V-8 works with an electrically operated Cambiocorsa sequential manual gearbox or a conventional six-speed-manual transmission. A GranSport offshoot of the Coupé goes on sale in the summer of 2004. Other changes for the 2005 model year will likely be minimal, but details have not yet been released. Get full Coupé report
