The University of Maryland Eastern Shore (UMES) is a land-grant, historically black college founded in 1886 as the Delaware Conference Academy. Since its beginning, the institution has had several name changes and governing bodies. It was Maryland State College from 1948 until 1970, when it became one of the five campuses that formed the University of Maryland. In 1988, it became a member of the eleven-campus University of Maryland System. UMES is approved by the state of Maryland and fully accredited by the Middle States Association of Colleges and Schools.

As the HCASC National Champion, Morehouse College takes home a $50,000 grant, while runner-up University of Maryland Eastern Shore wins a $25,000 grant. Remaining teams earn grants ranging from $3,000 to $15,000. Through the program, more than $300,000 in institutional grants are awarded annually to participating schools.

With a rich history as an historically black, land-grant institution, University of Maryland Eastern Shore is poised for a new era of success. Its 13th president, Dr. Thelma B. Thompson who assumed the office in July 2002, has ambitious plans for UMES.
