Accompanied by his dutiful wife Elizabeth (Mary Ure, Shaw's real-life wife), Custer settles into his new command, and wastes no time alienating his new charges with his dictatorial, off-putting manner. Of his new seconds-in-command, he regards Major Reno (Ty Hardin) as a hopeless alcoholic, and is contemptuous toward Lieutenant Benteen (Jeffrey Hunter) who feels sympathetic towards the Cheyenne. Matters get progressively worse when Sheridan mandates an attack on a Cheyenne village, which disintegrates into open slaughter. Compounding matters, several soldiers desert the outpost to pan for gold, spurring the capture and execution for desertion of the ringleader, Sergeant Mulligan (Robert Ryan, making the most out of the small but showy role.)

Mary Ure did not return to film for another five years but did perform on stage. However, her personal life was in turmoil and her growing alcoholism affected her career to the point where she was fired from the 1974 pre-Broadway production of Love for Love and replaced by her understudy, Glenn Close.
An enchantingly beautiful, luminous blonde, Mary Ure was born in Glasgow in 1933. Her first film was the Korda's Storm Over the Nile (1955), a misfiring remake of The Four Feathers (1939). Next was Windom's Way (1957) - a tale of rubber plantation strikes and marital strife, but more significant events had been occurring off-screen. In 1956 she starred as Alison in John Osborne's 'Look Back in Anger' at the Royal Court theatre in London. She began an affair with the married Osborne and after his divorce they tied the knot in 1957. By 1958... the marriage was falling apart.

Ginger Coffey (Robert Shaw) is an out-of-work Irish immigrant who moves to Montreal with his wife, Vera (Mary Ure), and teenage daughter, Paulie (Libby McClintock), in hopes of a better life. After six months, the family fortunes have not changed, and Vera and Paulie beg Ginger to return to Ireland. He lands a job as a proofreader with a newspaper, but Vera and Paulie move out when Vera realizes his 45 dollar-a-week paycheck will not suffice. Ginger quits his second job as a laundry-truck driver and pins all his hopes on becoming a reporter. Paulie comes back to live with him, but Ginger is fired at the paper and sinks deeper into alcoholism and depression. ~ Dan Pavlides, All Movie Guide

An episodic western from 1969, Robert Shaw stars as the title character, with Jeffrey Hunter, Mary Ure, Ty Hardin and others. The film was a widescreen production and contains several thrill ride sequences, so the presentation is severely compromised by the cropping. The 140 minute film is spread to two sides. The colors are a little bland and fleshtones are dull, with mild smearing in the darker sequences. The monophonic sound is weak and scratchy, requiring extra amplification. The film is not captioned and is accompanied by profiles and filmographies for Shaw, Hardin and Hunter, though a film listed as one of Hunter’s credits was produced about a decade after he died.
