Mary Pierce's run to the last sixteen is a nice surprise for French tennis fans. Having lost to Russian girls in every tournament prior to Roland Garros, Pierce broke that losing spiral by outgunning Vera Zvonareva (9) in the third round. Stronger and fitter than at any time in the past five years, the 30-year-old is playing like a woman on borrowed time. Patty Schnyder will be well aware of her opponents' new frame of mind and will take care not to underestimate her. Only beaten by Justine Henin-Hardenne and Amélie Mauresmo on clay this year, Schnyder is bang on form. Pierce leads 4-2 in the head-to-head, but the two have not met since 2002.

Mary Pierce has always been one of the most dangerous players on the WTA Tour. Her power makes her capable of beating anyone on a given day, but her history has been a roller coaster of great and dismal performances. What changed for her at this year's Family Circle Cup was her hitting well -- make that spectacularly -- in every match. She dropped only 12 games in the entire tournament, beating Chris Evert's 1985 record of 15.
At the same times, Mary Pierce has defeated British partner Elena Baltacha & Amanda Janes 6-3 & 6-2 with her compatriot & younger player Tatiana Golovin in the first round of women doubles!! :) :loveya:

Born in Canada to an American father and a French mother, Mary Pierce learned to play tennis at the age of ten with her father, who trained her relentlessly for eight hours a day under the Florida sun. At fourteen, she turned professional, but a year later broke with the American Tennis Federation, leading to her moving across the Atlantic and her final choice of France, in 1990, as her professional and emotional homeland. At the age of twenty, she won her first Grand Slam title at the Australian Internationals, but then went through a period of doubt marked by the break-up with her father, poor results, a succession of coaches and especially of injuries.
Mary Pierce Mary Pierce was born on January 15th, 1975, in Montreal, Canada while her mother was on a trip to the city. She never lived in Montreal but maintains an affinity with the people there whenever the WTA tour makes a stop for the Canadian Open. During her childhood, her father Jim initiated Pierce into the sport of tennis.
