Mary Pierce attributes her strong play largely to the fact that she is, for the first time in a long while, actually having fun playing. She has begun to renew ties with her difficult father, she is engaged to be married to baseball pro Roberto Alomar, and she has her brother now accompanying her as her coach. Let's hope that her happiness continues. If so, she's likely to be a very strong contender for the biggest of all clay court tournaments, the French Open.

In crushing Croatia's Jelena Kostanic 6-1, 6-0 today, in just 58 minutes, Mary Pierce wrote her name in the French Open record books. The champion of 2000 notched her 40th win in Paris, joining ten other women to have achieved that feat. The absolute record is held by Steffi Graff, who won an incredible 84 matches on the Roland Garros clay. The win ... means that Pierce, now aged 30, has reached the third round for the eleventh time in 15 participations.

Roger Federer was given about as favorable a path through the French Open as he could have hoped in Friday's draw, while 2000 champion and 2005 runner-up Mary Pierce pulled out because of injuries. The top-ranked Federer will begin his bid for a fourth consecutive major title against Arnaud Clement of France.

In 1994, Pierce reached her first Grand Slam final at the French Open in record-breaking style. She became first player to reach championship's fourth round while dropping only two games. She conceded just 10 games during her route to the final, which included a 6-2, 6-2 thrashing of World No. 1 Steffi Graf in the semi-finals. In the final she lost 6-4, 6-4 to Arantxa Sánchez Vicario .

At 27 years of age, Pierce is close to the end of her tennis career, unless she pulls a Martina Navratilova. Considering the adversity she had to overcome from the start with the interference of her alleged abusive father Jim, Pierce has done well for herself. She has won two Grand Slam titles, the Australian and the French Open, and has amassed over $6,000,000 of prize money since turning pro.
