When Mary Kay was two years old, John began a political career. He ran for a seat in the state legislature. He was very conservative, as were most people in his district, and was a member of the John Birch Society. At campaign appearances, John and Mary made a striking couple.

Every spring, Mary Kay corp puts on "Career Conference" in several cities around the country. This weekend event features training, speeches by National Sales Directors, addresses from various corporate "celebrities", and recognition of Directors and consultants. It's like a scaled-down version of the company's Seminar held in Dallas every summer. Once again, this is a regional event. So you may be a consultant in Utah, for example, but the Career Conference for your area is being held in Denver. You are responsible for your airfare or driving expenses, registration fee, hotel costs and meals as well.

Steve, suspecting for some time that Mary Kay and Vili’s relationship had become physical, found a love letter from Mary to Vili. For the first time in their relationship, Steve became physically abusive, punching Mary in the stomach in an attempt to make her miscarry. Both Steve and Mary’s mother suggested she have an abortion but she refused. A relative that Steve had confided in called the authorities and reported Mary Kay’s behavior with her, by then 12-year old, student.
