Mary Astor: Career
built 636 days ago
Mary Astor's day will be Aug. 29. Her screen career started in silents. Osborne is thrilled that TCM will show "Dodsworth," a 1936 drama, at 8 p.m. that day. "It's one of the best movies ever made," Osborne says.
In 1928 Warners loaned Mary to Fox to appear in Dressed To Kill, in which she had a more substantive part than usual. The story involved a girl who poses as a gun moll in order to join a gang of thieves. Her motive was to prove the innocence of her boy friend, accused of their crime. Reviews were excellent, and when her contract with Warners expired, Fox signed Mary to a pact at $3,750 a week. She had met director Kenneth Hawks in 1927 and on February 26, 1928, the couple married. She continued her acting career.
Astor took voice training and singing lessons during her time off, but no roles were offered. Her acting career was then given a boost by her friend, Florence Eldridge (wife of Fredric March), whom she confided in. Eldridge, who was to star in the stage play Among the Married at the Majestic Theatre in Downtown Los Angeles, recommended Astor for the second female lead. The play was a success and her voice was deemed suitable, being described as low and vibrant.
