Marvin Gaye was a difficult artist for the business people who managed his career. There are endless stories of his antics, that kept the image damage control people at Motown busy. Had it not been for his magnitude of raw talent as a singer and song writer, there is no doubt, that he would have been out of a job at Motown, in the early stages of his career, due to his behaviour.

Marvin Gaye (April 2, 1939 - April 1, 1984) was an American soul and R&B singer who gained international fame during the 1960s. His best records are still highly regarded, and he is often cited as one of the finest singers of his era.

When Marvin Gaye first emerged, he sang in doo wop groups that had minor hits. He played drums on early Motown hits like Please Mr. Postman and Fingertips part 2, Stevie Wonder’s first hit. He co-wrote Dancing in the Street. He practically pleaded with record company execs to become a singer in his own right. Appropriately enough, his first solo hit was Stubborn Kind of Fellow.

Marvin Gaye made a huge contribution to soul music in general and the Motown sound in particular. As one of Motown’s renaissance men, Gaye could do it all. He wrote, produced and played a variety of instruments. Most of all, Gaye possessed a classic R&B voice that was edged with grit yet tempered with sweetness. A musical visionary, he conceived of albums as something more than individual songs, whether it be his early collections of show tunes and standards or later thematic masterworks about the state of the world (What’s Going On?), sexual politics (Let’s Get It On) and marriage (Here, My Dear).
