Convinced he was bad luck to his partners (Wells and Weston had left Motown shortly after their collaborations with him), Marvin would avoid duets until teaming with Diana Ross in 1973 for the Hal Davis-produced Diana and Marvin. Because he was a sensitive guy, Gaye used to feel like he had some kind of hex on him because something happened to everybody who sang with him.

Gaye's idea was to use in a looser, more jazzlike context the intricately woven multitracked lead vocals that made his hits so engrossing. Working and reworking standards as well as personal favorites, he twisted his vocals around sweet, keening string lines and squeezed fresh hurt from the already poignant melodies of such songs as Frank Loesser's "I Wish I Didn't Love You So" and the Johnny Mandel evergreen "The Shadow of Your Smile."

Gaye scored his first Top Ten smash, but often found his role as a hitmaker stifling. His desire to become a crooner of lush romantic ballads ran in direct opposition to Motown's all-important emphasis on chart success, and the ongoing battle between his artistic ambitions and the label's demands for commercial product continued throughout Gaye's long tenure with the company.

By the time 1984 rolled around, Marvin was on a train ride to hell. He owed a lot of money to the IRS, and he was in the midst of a downward spiral of drug addiction and abuse. He wasn't able to hold on to a relationship, and was becoming increasingly more paranoid. He told his musicians that he was being stalked by murderers, and began wearing a bullet-proof vest.
